jBCNConf 2017 review

Alfresco has released the last GA version for 5.2 CE, available at 201707 GA Release.

In the next months, version 6 will start to produce some EA (Early Access) release before the first GA (Generally Available) release will be available.

For Alfresco 5.2. CE, this process has produced 3 EA releases and 5 GA release in about 1 year:

In this 201707 GA Release is important to note that GhostScript has been replaced by PDFium, due to license changes in gs. Also a new SOLR 6 component is available for using in real environments.

Alfresco Community 6 will be adapted to the new architecture designed for the product, closer to a service composition approach, and components will be probably rebranded:

  • Alfresco Content Services as core part of the  Alfresco Repository
  • Alfresco Process Services instead of the BPM engine previously named Activiti
  • Alfresco Search Services as new horizontal service, before it was released within Alfresco Repository as SOLR 4
  • Alfresco Governance Services is the new name for Record Management
  • Alfresco REST API as OpenAPIs component, before it was released within Alfresco Repository
  • Alfresco ADF as new development framework for frontend
  • Alfresco SDK as development framework for backend

It’s now a good chance to upgrade your Alfresco server with this last 5.2 release, as several months will happen before Alfresco 6 is recommended for prod environments. And it looks like version 6 will be radically different to current 5 branch.

1.1.1 addon release works properly with Alfresco 201707
